Stash Privacy Policy
Effective October 17, 2026. Applies to the Stash Mac app and the "Stash — Save to Mac" browser extension.
Summary
Stash keeps everything you save on your own Mac. We do not run a server that receives your data, we do not have accounts, and we do not use ads or tracking. Anonymous usage statistics are off unless you turn them on. We never sell or share your data.
What the extension handles
The extension acts only when you use it: when you click its button, press its shortcut, choose a right-click menu item, click the "Save to Stash" button on a post, bookmark a post on X, or start a bookmarks import. It then reads:
- Website content you choose to save: the page address and title, selected text, images, and for posts on X the text, images, links and author.
- A screenshot of the visible part of the tab, only when you ask for one.
The extension sends this content to the Stash app on your own Mac at http://127.0.0.1. It does not send it anywhere else. If the app is closed, the extension keeps the save in the browser's local extension storage and delivers it when the app starts.
The extension also stores, in local extension storage, the port of the Stash app and whether your X bookmarks were imported before. This data never leaves your browser.
The extension does not read pages you do not act on, does not record your browsing history, and does not collect passwords, payment details, messages or location.
What the Mac app stores
The app stores your saved items, images, notes and search index in ~/Library/Application Support/Snipper on your Mac. Search, text recognition in screenshots and the AI model run on your Mac. Your saved content is not uploaded for processing.
Network requests the app makes
- It downloads the open EmbeddingGemma 2 search model from Hugging Face and the Transformers.js library from jsDelivr, once, and caches them on your Mac. These requests contain no saved content.
- It downloads images and link previews for items you saved, directly from the websites they come from.
Those websites receive the normal information of any web request, such as your IP address. Their own privacy policies apply.
Anonymous usage statistics (optional)
This is off by default. If you turn on "Share anonymous usage data" in the welcome guide or in Settings, the app sends usage events to PostHog (EU Cloud, servers in the EU), which we use to see how many people use Stash and which features they use.
- Each event contains only an event name (for example "app opened", "action used" or "snips added"), counts, the type of item or action (for example "screenshot" or "capture region"), the app version and the macOS version.
- Events never contain your saved content, page addresses, titles, notes, search queries or file names.
- Events carry a random ID created on your Mac. It is not linked to your name, email, Mac or any account. We have turned off location lookup and set PostHog to discard IP addresses.
Turn the setting off at any time to stop the events. Turning it off also deletes the random ID from your Mac. The browser extension never sends usage statistics.
Your control
You can delete any item in the app. To remove everything, quit Stash and delete the folder above. Removing the extension deletes its local storage.
Children
Stash is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If this policy changes, we update this page and its effective date.
